What's the Difference Between DTG and DTF Printing?

DTG (direct-to-garment) prints water-based ink straight into the fabric like a paper printer, giving a soft finish with no hand-feel — best on 100% cotton. DTF (direct-to-film) prints the design onto a film that's then heat-pressed onto the garment, working on almost any fabric including polyester and blends, with bolder colour and strong durability. DTG feels softer; DTF is more versatile.

DTF's flexibility is the draw: one process handles cotton, polyester, blends, light and dark garments, and even non-flat items — with no pre-treatment step and vivid colour on dark fabric. When DTG is the better pick

If you want the absolute softest finish on premium 100% cotton tees — retail fashion where hand-feel sells — DTG's ink-in-fabric result is hard to beat. On polyester or dark blends, though, DTG struggles where DTF shines.

Cost and quantity

Both suit small runs with no screen setup. Per-shirt costs are broadly comparable; garment and design factors move the price more than the method choice between these two. For larger simple-design runs, screen printing may undercut both.
