What's the Best Fabric for Custom T-Shirt Printing? Cotton vs Polyester vs Blends

100% cotton gives the softest print and best DTG results; polyester wins for sportswear and sublimation; cotton-poly blends balance durability, shape retention and print quality. Full fabric guide.

For most custom t-shirts, 100% ring-spun cotton is the best all-round choice: soft, prints beautifully with DTG and DTF, and comfortable to wear. Polyester wins for sportswear, moisture-wicking and sublimation printing. Cotton-poly blends (often 65/35 or 50/50) sit in the middle — more durable and shape-retaining than pure cotton, slightly less soft, and reliable with DTF.

Why fabric decides your print method

Sublimation only works on polyester — it dyes the fibres, so it can't bond to cotton. DTG loves cotton and struggles on polyester. DTF (the flexible all-rounder) works across nearly all of these, which is why it's the default for mixed small runs.

Does GSM apply to fabric too?

Yes — t-shirt weight is measured in gsm just like paper. A 140gsm tee is light and cheap; 180gsm is a solid everyday weight; 200gsm+ is premium heavyweight. For workwear worn daily, spend the extra on weight.

What we recommend

Event and promo tees: 150–180gsm cotton. Premium merch: ring-spun or tri-blend. Sportswear: technical polyester. Workwear: cotton-poly blend. Feel samples in our Ipswich shop before a bulk order.
