Menu Printing for Restaurants, Cafés & Takeaways: Formats & Costs

Which menu format fits your venue: laminated A4, folded takeaway menus, booklet menus or placemats. Materials that survive daily handling, and cost drivers.

Menu Printing for Restaurants, Cafés & Takeaways: Formats & Costs

Menu printing splits into two jobs: in-venue menus that must survive daily handling (laminated or heavy stock), and takeaway/door-drop menus printed cheaply in volume on lighter paper. Most food businesses need both, and they're specified very differently.

Which menu format suits your venue?

What makes in-venue menus last?

Lamination is the difference between a menu that survives months and one that's dog-eared in a week — matt laminate hides fingerprints, gloss maximises food photography. Encapsulation (sealed edges) makes menus fully wipeable for daily-use venues. If prices change often, laminate a template design and print insert sheets instead.

Takeaway menus: print cheap, distribute wide

Door-drop menus are a numbers game: lighter stock (115–150gsm) keeps unit cost and delivery weight down. A5 works for compact menus; A4 roll-folded to DL gives six panels for a full takeaway listing. Print in volume — reprints of an unchanged design are always cheaper per unit at higher quantities.

Updating menus without reprinting everything

Structure the design so volatile content is isolated: prices in one column, specials on an insert or chalkboard-style panel. When only prices change, a single-sheet insert reprint costs a fraction of replacing laminated menus. Supply artwork per the file setup guide and keep the source file editable.

Allergen and legal content

UK menus must be able to signpost allergen information (Natasha's Law tightened labelling for pre-packed items). Build a standing "allergen advice" line into the template so it never gets dropped in updates — and check current FSA guidance when the menu is rewritten.

FAQs

What's the cheapest way to print takeaway menus? A5 on 130gsm in volume — the same economics as flyer printing, where 500 A5 sheets cost £65.

Should menus be matt or gloss? Gloss flatters food photography; matt reads as premium and hides fingerprints. For laminated daily-use menus, matt laminate is the popular choice.

Can I print menus same-day in Ipswich? Unlaminated A4/A5 menus qualify for same-day printing before the 1pm cut-off; laminated and folded menus usually need an extra working day.

How many takeaway menus should I print? Match your distribution plan, not your storage cupboard: a 5,000-door leaflet drop needs 5,000 + in-shop stock. Response typically runs 0.5–2%, so volume drives orders.
