What does banner gsm actually tell you?

Grams per square metre, or gsm, describes how heavy and therefore how thick the PVC sheet is. Outdoor banners are typically produced somewhere between 440gsm and 510gsm. Lower gsm material is lighter, easier to fold, and cheaper to ship, which makes it a sensible choice for short-term promotions, indoor exhibitions or banners that will only be displayed for a few days. Higher gsm material is denser and more resistant to tearing, stretching and UV fading, so it holds up better when a banner is left outside for weeks or months at a time, particularly on an exposed wall, fence line or scaffold.

How does wind exposure change the decision?

A banner fixed against a solid wall behaves very differently to one strung between two posts in an open car park.
